OVERVIEW
Deosai National Park sits on a high-altitude plain between Skardu and Astore in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, with an average elevation of 4,114 metres (13,497 ft) — among the highest plateaus in the world. Local legend gives it the name "Land of Giants," after old stories of giant beings said to roam its open plains.
For a few months each summer, the barren winter landscape transforms: wildflowers carpet the plateau from June through August, streams swell with snowmelt, and the park's most famous resident — the Himalayan brown bear — comes out of hibernation to graze in one of its last protected habitats in Pakistan.
At the heart of the plateau lies Sheosar Lake, a glacial lake ringed by snow-capped peaks, often the highlight of a day trip across Deosai. The road in is unpaved and requires a 4x4 jeep, which is part of what has kept the plateau this untouched.
THINGS TO DO
01
A glacial lake at the centre of the plateau, framed by the Deosai and Burzil ranges — one of the most photographed spots in Gilgit-Baltistan.
02
Deosai is one of the last strongholds of the Himalayan brown bear in Pakistan. Early morning and dusk offer the best (though never guaranteed) sighting chances.
03
From June to August, the plateau blooms with hundreds of alpine wildflower species, turning the plains gold, purple, and white.
04
With almost no light pollution, Deosai's night skies are some of the clearest in the region — a favourite for stargazers and photographers.
05
The drive itself is part of the experience — an open, rolling plateau that feels closer to the Tibetan steppe than anywhere else in Pakistan.
06
Wide-open horizons, dramatic cloud formations, and golden-hour light make Deosai a standout for landscape photography.
