Sarfaranga Cold Desert stretches along the banks of the Indus River, a short drive from Skardu city. It's one of the highest cold deserts in the world — a stretch of golden sand dunes set against the backdrop of snow-capped Karakoram peaks, a combination found almost nowhere else on the planet.
What used to be a quiet scenic stop has, in recent years, turned into one of the region's liveliest adventure spots. The dunes now regularly host jeep rallies, and the site has become a go-to destination for visitors looking to add some adrenaline to their Skardu itinerary — from dune bashing in a 4x4 to seasonal paragliding flights over the desert.
It's an easy half-day trip from Skardu, making it one of the most accessible adventure activities in the region — no multi-day trek required.
