OVERVIEW
Shigar Fort — locally known as Fong-Khar, "Palace on the Rock" — was built around 400 years ago by the Amacha dynasty, the ruling family of Shigar. It sits at the mouth of Shigar Valley, where the Shigar River meets a landscape of orchards and traditional Balti villages.
The fort fell into disrepair over the centuries before being carefully restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, which converted it into a boutique heritage hotel while preserving its original carved wood balconies, stone masonry, and intricate window lattices — hallmarks of traditional Balti craftsmanship rarely seen intact elsewhere.
Beyond the fort itself, Shigar Valley is known for its apricot and apple orchards, the centuries-old Amburiq Mosque, and its role as a traditional staging point for expeditions heading toward K2 and the Baltoro Glacier.
